How to Install Bamboo Fence to a Colorbond Fence | DIY Guide (No Bottom Rail Access) / Exotic Imports

Installing a bamboo fence is a great way to instantly add warmth and natural beauty to your outdoor space. But what if your Colorbond fence’s bottom rail is blocked by a retaining wall or structure? No problem. Exotic Imports is here to help.

In this guide, we show you how to use treated pine battens and the correct fasteners to create a solid mounting solution—with no need to access the bottom rail.

Here’s a simple, DIY-friendly method using materials available from your local hardware supplier.

🔨 Materials Required:

Treated Pine Timber Battens - H3 outdoor rated – MGP10/F7 (70 x 35mm), lengths to suit.

Metal Screws – 12G x 65mm Hex Head with Seal (for securing timber to Colorbond posts)

Timber Screws – 12G x 65mm Type 17 (for attaching bamboo fence panels to timber)

Cordless drill/driver

Plus a level and measuring tape for accuracy

🧰 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Mark your fixing points
Position two treated timber battens horizontally—one approx. 200mm from the top of the fence, and another at a suitable lower point.
  2. Secure battens to Colorbond posts
Use metal screws to fix the pine battens directly into the Colorbond posts. Make sure they are level and firmly anchored.
  3. Fix bamboo fence panels
Align the bamboo panels and use timber screws to secure them to the battens. Start at one end and work across for a tight fit.
  4. Note: Allow for a slight gap at the base of the bamboo fence panel if the bamboo fence is sitting on top of the retaining wall, otherwise it will get coated wiith sealant when you paint or spray on the weather protectant sealant.
  5. 🟡 Tip: Pre-drilling pilot holes may help avoid the timber and bamboo fence splitting, especially near ends.
