Marble vs Riverstone Basins: Which Suits Your Bathroom?
Share
Choose marble if you prefer a defined shape and a choice of cream or grey stone. Choose riverstone if you prefer an individual, organic shape with a natural rock exterior. Both are natural stone: the colour, markings and character of each basin vary.
This guide compares the marble and riverstone vanity basins available from Exotic Imports, with Australia-wide delivery options and pickup from our Osborne Park, Perth showroom.

When to choose a marble basin
Marble suits a bathroom where you want a defined round, square or rectangular shape. Cream can complement warm timber and neutral tiles; grey can work with cooler colours and contrasting tapware. These are styling choices, so compare your basin photos with your vanity and tile samples.
A polished exterior gives a smooth appearance, while textured and rock finishes add surface detail. Natural colour and veining still vary, including between two basins of the same model.

For example, Lustre Tone marble basins are listed in 40cm and 45cm diameters, both 15cm high. Other marble models offer different shapes and heights.
When to choose a riverstone basin
Riverstone suits a bathroom where you want the basin's natural outline and rock texture to be a feature. Each basin has a polished bowl inside a textured exterior, and the shape can be less uniform than a round or rectangular marble design.

Our riverstone range has small, medium and large options. The listed examples are approximately 41 × 34 × 15cm, 50 × 32 × 15cm and 54 × 34 × 15cm (length × width × height). Confirm the measurements of the actual basin you select before planning your benchtop.
Check the fit before you order
- Measure the vanity: allow space around the basin for cleaning, tapware and everyday use.
- Check the finished height: an above-counter basin adds its height to the benchtop. Consider who will use it.
- Match the tap and waste: check tap height and reach, the waste fitting and any overflow requirements with your plumber. Lustre Tone and the riverstone range list a 32mm waste hole; confirm the selected model before buying fittings.
- Check the weight for a floating vanity: before choosing a marble or riverstone basin, confirm the weight of the individual basin. Ask your vanity supplier and installer to confirm that the cabinet, wall structure and fixings can support the combined weight of the basin, benchtop and other expected loads. Follow the vanity manufacturer's load limits and installation requirements.
- Plan from the actual basin: have your installer confirm the final position and cut-outs with the basin on hand.
Cleaning and care
For both materials, use a soft cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for natural stone, following its directions. Rinse away residue and dry the surface after cleaning. Avoid abrasive scourers and acidic cleaners such as vinegar-based products; acids can dull or etch marble.
Ask us about care and sealing for your chosen basin. Sealing requirements depend on the stone, its existing treatment and the sealer used, so there is no single resealing timetable for every basin.

Common questions
Is riverstone the same as marble?
No. In our range, marble and riverstone are separate natural stone products. Marble offers defined shapes and cream or grey options; riverstone has an individual outline and rock exterior. Choose from the actual basin's appearance and specifications.
Can I choose two matching basins?
You can request photos of two available basins together. Marble models can offer a more consistent shape, but natural colour and veining vary. Riverstone outlines also vary, so a pair will not be identical.
Which is easier to clean?
Both ranges have polished interiors. A smooth exterior is generally easier to wipe around than a textured one, but the finish and access around the installed basin matter. Use stone-safe cleaning products for either material.
